  15. This is to announce the final Beta test edit of C-Kermit 6.0.192 for
  16. UNIX, VMS, and AOS/VS, hopefully to be joined by several other operating
  17. systems along the way.  The previous general release of C-Kermit was
  18. 5A(190) in October 1994.  The previous 6.0 Beta test, 6.0.192 Beta.029,
  19. was announced on August 23.  The changes since version 5A(190) are listed
  20. in the accumulated Beta announcements in the MAIL.TXT file (see below).

  22. This is Beta.030.  The changes since Beta.029 are minimal:

  24.  . New command-line option -B to force background (batch) mode.
  25.  . New \fbasename(filespec) function.
  26.  . PRINT command now allows trailing print options.
  27.  . Numerous "make the compiler happy" changes.
  28.  . READ from OPEN !READ (process) fixed.

  73. Thanks to all of you who tested the last Beta and sent in reports.  Special
  74. thanks to Martin Zinser of the Gesellschaft fuer Schwerionenforschung GSI,
  75. Darmstadt, and Joellen Windsor of the University of Arizona for the new VMS
  76. build procedure, and (again) to Peter Eichhorn for detailed and exhaustive
  77. tests (and quite a few excellent suggestions), and as always to Jeff Altman.

  79. Here are some notes about specific versions:

  81. THE MACINTOSH VERSION
  82.   Nothing new.  My Mac died so I can't even compile it any more.  Nobody
  83.   else has exhibited any interest in working on Mac Kermit, so unless things
  84.   take a radical and unexpected turn, Mac Kermit is a relic.
  85.  
  86. THE VMS VERSION
  87.   Built on VAX with Multinet and UCX, and on Alpha with Multinet (and of
  88.   course on both with no network support at all).  Binaries needed for
  89.   Alpha/UCX as well as for Wollongong, TCPware, CMU/Tek, etc -- everything
  90.   but Multinet.
  91.  
  92. THE AOS/VS VERSION
  93.   I can still build it myself for AOS/VS-II (but probably not for too much
  94.   longer -- the old MV disk is starting to crumble), but this version does
  95.   not work on AOS/VS Classic, and some people have been asking for it.
  96.   Somebody with an AOS/VS Classic system with the DG C compiler and linker
  97.   needs to build it and make the binary available.
  98.  
  99. THE OS-9 VERSION
  100.   We now have a 68000 binary for the OS-9 version of Beta.029:
  101.   kermit/test/bin/ck9ker.exe, dated 2 Sep 96; hopefully the Beta.030 binary
  102.   will appear shortly.  Still no news on OS-9000.

  104. THE AMIGA VERSION
  105.   from the previous Beta is in kermit/test/bin/ckiker.exe dated 16 Sep 96.

  135.   Individual binaries, all of them used to transfer themselves (in binary
  136.   mode, of course :-)  ftp them in binary mode.  The READ.ME file in this
  137.   directory explains what is what (text mode for this file only).  NOTE:
  138.   The VMS versions now have long descriptive names showing the hardware
  139.   (A or V), VMS version, C compiler and version, and TCP/IP product and
  140.   version.  The rest of the missing VMS binaries are needed.

  143.   Contains the VMS C-Kermit sources in convenient BACKUP saveset format,
  144.   hexified using CKVHEX.MAR, dehexifiable with CKVDEH.MAR, both also in
  145.   the same directory.

  167. Binaries for this final Beta version that are not already present -- for
  168. DG/UX, Solaris/Intel, Solaris/PowerPC, VMS with other TCP/IP products,
  169. whatever you have -- are needed.  This is the last chance before the final
  170. release to discover if you *can* make a binary for your platform.

  173. make arrangements to upload it.  If you tried and failed to build this
  174. version, also send me mail so we can work out the kinks.  Alternatively, I'm
  175. more than happy to do it myself if I can get Telnet and FTP access to an
